In recent years there has been a growing trend towards use of aspheric elements in optical designs. Aspheric optics can be a great choice as they help to reduce spherical aberrations. The problem is that they are not always a cost-effective solution. In higher volume applications – lens manufacturers will choose aspheric elements because they can reduce costs by moulding the required aspheric elements. For lower volume applications using aspheric optics only makes sense if they solve a problem that can not be overcome by spherical elements as the cost can be prohibitive. Aspheric elements should always be considered but they are not always the answer.
